Styling "Tricky" Rooms: How to Choose Bathroom Wall Art That Lasts

The bathroom is often a forgotten room when it comes to home styling, not only because it is often on the smaller side, but also because you need to choose decor that is able to withstand water and steam without issue.
If you’ve been feeling like your bathroom is just a bit “meh”, a well-chosen piece of wall art can really change the entire vibe. Here’s how to choose wall art for your most overlooked space that won’t just look great, but will also last the distance.
Know What You Need
We know this might seem easier said than done, but rather than knowing exactly what you need, start instead by trying to understand what your bathroom’s environment is like.
You might want to consider whether your bathroom has high or low humidity. High-humidity bathrooms are typically smaller and have less ventilation. You’re more likely to have a high-humidity bathroom if you live in a flat, or if your bathroom doesn’t have a window or a fan. Low-humidity bathrooms are typically much larger and may have windows or better airflow. Knowing whether your bathroom is a high-humidity or low-humidity environment can help you pick art that won’t fade, warp or end up growing mould.
Choose Materials Wisely
Once you know the kind of environment you’re working with, it’s time to start looking into the different kinds of materials that would work in your space. Whilst you might be able to get away with canvas wall art in bathrooms with great ventilation and low humidity, high-humidity bathrooms are better suited for framed prints that are properly sealed to protect from moisture.
Choosing metal frames, like gold frames for example, could be a better choice for places with high humidity, as metal is less likely than wood to be damaged by moisture. However, it’s still important to maintain your bathroom wall art in order to keep it looking great for longer.
Maintenance can include regular cleaning and removal of any debris or soap scum from both the glass and the frame. Checking that your frame is properly sealed is also important to ensure that it doesn’t warp or become damaged. We’d recommend doing this monthly and replacing your frame at the first sign of damage to protect your print.
Consider Your Space
One of the most important things you can do when it comes to styling your bathroom is to consider your space and ensure you’re intentional with your choices.
Often, bathrooms are quite small rooms, so going for one small, intentional piece is often a better choice than something more cluttered. Some of the most popular placements of small art pieces in the bathroom include above the toilet or above a towel rack.
You also want to match the finishes in your bathroom to your prints to make sure that your bathroom looks and feels cohesive. If all your finishes are silver, opt for more cool-toned pieces. Or if you’ve got a lot of black accents in your space, consider choosing black frames to keep your bathroom in sync.
Placement Matters
We’ve touched on this already, but you should carefully consider the placement of your art, especially when it comes to your bathroom. You don’t want to put prints above the shower or on any walls that collect condensation, as those are going to be the places that lead to the most water damage.
If you have a lot of natural light in your bathroom, we’d also recommend not placing prints directly opposite windows so that you can prevent any fading from the sun.
Bathroom Art To Make You Feel Good
When it comes to decorating tricky or overlooked spaces, it’s important to remember that your art is meant to make you feel good in your space. By choosing artwork intentionally, opting for the right materials and choosing placements wisely, you can take even the tiniest bathroom to totally new heights.
